Carob (Ceratonia siliqua) is a flowering evergreen tree or shrub. It is widely cultivated for its edible pods, and as an ornamental tree in gardens and landscapes. The carob tree is native to the Mediterranean region and the Middle East.
Carob products are used as a natural substitute for sugar and chocolate. Carob does not contain caffeine, phenylethylamine and theobromine, which can cause allergic reactions and migraines in some people. Carob pods contain a lot of calcium, potassium, Vitamins A, B1, B2, trace elements such as iron, copper, nickel, manganese and chromium.
