The Latin name is Radix Valeriana officinalis L. (Valerianaceae).
Description: perennial herb plant, up to 1.5 m high, with vertical, short roots with numerous roots, characteristic smell. The stem has opposite leaves, the flowers are light pink to white, in complex inflorescences in the summer, then form small seeds with white hairs. Blooms from May to August.
Chemical composition: essential oil (valerian ester) in glycoside valeride, valeropotriates, alkaloids, resins, tannins, sugars. The roots contain iridoids, valerian acids that affect the nervous system.
Application: internally: when nerve overwork regulates heart activity, insomnia, hysteria, fear, high blood pressure, and menstruation disorder. In case of hysteria, the action of the valerian is enhanced in combination with white mistletoe and in the case of insomnia with hops. External is recommended for the treatment of eczema and minor injuries. Outside: 100 grams of roots left in the water bath.
Preparation: 1-2 teaspoons of chopped roots are soaked with 1/4 liter of cold water for 12 hours. Decoction: 100 g of roots are poured with 2 liters of boiling water and allowed to soak for 2 hours.
Use: internally: 1 cup 2-3 times a day. Outside: Decoction of 100 g roots (left in a water bath).
Note: contraindicated for patients with liver disease!
